Applications

In the case of any new discovery, there will be someone who will ask what is right for? Yes, it is a good question. The science is here to expand the knowledge that brings benefits to all of us. Even tiny finding can lead to game-changing technology and amazing applications. Today we already know several groundbreaking technologies and innovative devices. So, what is the next big thing in organic electronics?

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs)

OLED displays are very popular for mobile phones and tablets since it provides infinite contrast (true black), lower battery drain, wide viewing angles, and excellent colour accuracy. Furthermore, it is possible to make foldable displays or transparent screens suitable for smart glasses or smart windows. The OLED displays as stickers are already coming to replace labels on daily used products as soft-drink bottles and making moving pictures anywhere.

Organic solar cells (OSCs)

Nowadays is photovoltaics based on silicon solar cells that are insufficient to make us free from fossil resources since there are several drawbacks such as area occupancy, the significant environmental footprint of the fabrication process, and low shade tolerance (working perfectly only on direct sunshine). Fortunately, the novel organic semiconductors and cutting-edge fabrication technology make from OSCs potential candidate for climate fighter. The OSCs are light, flexible, and semi-transparent that makes them well qualified for building-integrated photovoltaics. In addition, due to the unique nature of organic semiconductors can OSC give power even under a shade where silicon solar cells have no output already.

Organic sensors

Even an electronic brain cannot be smart if it cannot sense what happens around. Sensors are essential for all future electronics such as wearable electronics, augmented reality, autonomous vehicle, smart cities, or any device connected to the Internet of Things (IoT). Organic sensors bring revolutionary features transforming science-fiction into reality. Novel optical image sensors offer a high dynamic range (HDR) without any need of postprocessing. Biological sensors provide perfect selectivity based on DNA matching that changes time-consuming analysis to a few seconds test.  Biocompatible organic sensors give us a chance to make an ideal interface between human and electronics that will make disabled people walking again.

Organic transistors (OTFT)

Transistors are the fundamental elements that serve as switches in electronic devices and systems such as computer processors or memories. The organic transistors are unique due to low-cost fabrication, flexible, and biocompatible nature that gives us a chance to have electronics incorporated everywhere. Imagine electronic access as a tattoo or the computer capable to communicate with human neurons. Organic transistors are not just an alternative to silicone devices; they are beyond state-of-the-art.
